CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

JULIE HAD BEEN on the job several weeks before she was given her welcoming audience with the superintendent. She didn’t know why it had taken so long. Newcomers normally received an interview in the first few days of being hired, but Julie didn’t dwell on it. Picard was the boss. Scheduling was at his option, not hers. When Alyson announced that Dr. Picard wanted to see her, she stopped what she was doing, made a quick visit to the ladies’ room to apply fresh lip gloss and check the hint of eye shadow she wore, then proceeded to his office.

The secretary, a tall, very pretty, slender blonde, not much older than Julie, announced her. The superintendent’s corner office was expectedly large, with two windows in each of the outside walls. His paneled desk in the corner between them had a glass top, and, except for a green shaded banker’s lamp and a wooden basket for incoming and outgoing correspondence, was completely bare. The walls were covered with plaques, framed awards and pictures of people, a few of them instantly recognizable personalities.

He was standing with his back to the doorway, gazing out a window, hands clasped behind him, when Julie entered. Turning almost with a jerk, as if he’d been roused from deep thought, he smiled and came around the side of the desk. Julie had met him on several occasions, most recently at her graduation when she received her master’s degree, but this was the first time she had occasion to speak with him.

His thick dark-brown hair was sprinkled with gray at the temples, giving him a distinguished appearance. He wasn’t tall, but he was slim and lithe. He wouldn’t be described as handsome, though he had a charismatic air many women found entrancing. His personality and manners were less impressive to men, but even they tended to call him a “nice guy” or “sharp” in the admirable sense. Julie quickly realized his brown eyes were capable of drilling into a person.

“Ms. First.” He moved toward her with outstretched hand. “How nice to finally meet you.”

The secretary closed the door behind her. As it clicked, he squeezed Julie’s hands. His touch was warm and dry, friendly and sincere.

“I’m sorry to have taken so long to personally welcome you to our organization. I hope you’re beginning to feel at home here.”

“Yes, thank you.” She wondered when he was going to release her hands.

As if reading her mind, he let go and waved her toward the conversation pit in the corner of the room opposite his desk. A low square table was the centerpiece for two couches against the inside walls and two armchairs facing them. Following his direction, Julie took the inside corner of one of the couches, expecting him to sit in the opposing chair. Instead, he lounged beside her. With Rolf, she would have welcomed the proximity. This man raised the hairs on the back of her neck.

“Tell me a little about yourself,” he prompted as he positioned himself sideways on the cushion to observe her.
